Sheriff Richard Giardino was born and raised in Fulton County. He graduated from Gloversville High School, Siena College and Albany Law School. While in college and law school the Sheriff worked summers for the Mayfield Police Department, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and the Yarmouth Police Department in Massachusetts.

Upon graduation from law school he was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney in Nassau County, New York. He returned to Fulton County in 1986 as an Assistant District Attorney. He was elected Fulton County District Attorney in 1991. He was re-elected DA in 1995.

He was appointed by the Governor in 1996 to fill the seat of Fulton County Court Judge that was left vacant by the untimely death of the Honorable Michael Mazzone. He was elected in November of that year and re-elected in 2006.

Judge Giardino presided over 4,500 civil and criminal cases in his 18 and a half years as a judge. He tried over 200 cases including 40 cases involving murder or attempted murder charges. He has received numerous awards both as District Attorney and Judge.

He was an adjunct faculty member at Albany law school. Rich has taught at numerous police academies. He is a Part-Time Instructor of Criminal Law & Constitutional law at the Fulton Montgomery Community College, since 1986. Sheriff Giardino has been an active firefighter with the Mayfield Fire Department for 18 years. Fulton County has a population of 53,000 and an area of 537 square miles.
