Phil Povero, Sheriff
John Falbo, Undersheriff
74 Ontario Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424
It is pretty safe to say that Sheriff Phil Povero is the most experienced Sheriff ever to become Sheriff. Sheriff Povero served 27 years as Ontario County Sheriff. In 2018, he retired after 47 years with the Sheriff’s Office.
But the resignation of both the incumbent Sheriff and Undersheriff left a serious leadership void at the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. With both offices vacant it became the responsibility of the senior county judge to appoint a Sheriff. Sheriff Povero was asked to come out of retirement and complete the term until the November election in 2022. Those were not his retirement plans and certainly not his wife Cindy’s. But the importance of both the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and the people of Ontario County left him with no choice but accept the job for the next 14 months. He will not be a candidate in fall election.
