Our Mission

The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute bridges community and law enforcement by fostering positive relationships with our state’s youth, supporting crime victims, and providing the latest training and education to officers, to help keep people safe.

The New York State Sheriffs Institute (NYSSI) is a not-for-profit organization that was formed in 1979. It is made up of all the Sheriffs of New York State and supported by donations, grants, and honorary memberships to maintain its programs. The Office of Sheriff is unique because it is the only elected position in law enforcement. New York State Sheriffs are public servants committed to the people in the communities in which they serve. This commitment extends to statewide efforts, as a part of the Institute. Core initiatives include: New York State Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, Crime Victim Notification Systems, and Education & Training efforts.
