Sheriff Jeff Smith is a lifelong resident of Montgomery County. He has been dedicated to public service for 35 years, including 34 years with Montgomery County. Sheriff Smith is completing his first term as Sheriff, just prior he served as Director of Montgomery County Emergency Services. During his tenure of 30 years serving the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office , he served as a Correction Officer, a Patrol Deputy Sheriff, a K-9 Deputy (K-9 Dix), a Sergeant, A Lieutenant and Undersheriff for eleven years. He is also a certified Police Instructor, DARE Instructor and Crisis Negotiator. Additionally, Sheriff Smith has served as the Montgomery County STOP-DWI Coordinator, he has been a volunteer firefighter for 35 years including serving as the Fire Chief for the Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Department from 2014-2017. Sheriff Smith earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Herkimer County Community College, he has completed numerous police training courses and in 2002 graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Sheriff Smith has been married to his wife for 32 years, has two children and three grandchildren, they all reside within Montgomery County. Sheriff Smith serves on many boards and organizations throughout Montgomery County, for example, the HFM Prevention Council Board of Directors, the Montgomery County OFA Advisory Council, the FMCC Criminal Justice Advisory Council and the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, just to name a few. Sheriff Smith believes that the Sheriff’s Office is only as strong as its relationship and partnership with the communities they serve. Leading by example, working hard, caring for others, being accessible and communicating regularly are all strengths exhibited by the Sheriff and members of the Sheriff’s Office
