On January 1, 2002, Donald B. Smith became the 53rd Sheriff of Putnam County. Immediately prior to becoming the Sheriff, he had served as the Deputy County Executive of Putnam County. Sheriff Smith is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and has a Master’s Degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. Sheriff Smith is also a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College and was a Fellow at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. During his career in the United States Army, he commanded at every level from Platoon Leader to Assistant Division Commander, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. Sheriff Smith and his wife Jane have a son, daughter, and five grandchildren. The Smith family was recognized as a Great American Family while stationed in Mainz, Germany in 1983. Since taking office, Sheriff Smith has emphasized community policing and all law enforcement throughout the County working together as a team. He has focused on making the County safer for its young people by increasing the intensity of the war on drugs, and by emphasizing drivers’ safety programs and safety belt usage, especially for the youthful driving population. Under his leadership, the School Resource Officer Program has expanded to eight (8) deputies serving in the high schools and middle schools of Putnam County. Sheriff Smith was re-elected to his second term in November of 2005. Putnam County has a population of 100,570 and encompasses 267 square miles.
